No matter whether surfaces are treated or not, excessively damp or abnormally dark areas which may be evident in all urban areas will encourage the progressive development of algae, lichen and moss. This is often at its worst in north facing sun free environments and can ultimately create dangerous high slip surfaces that so easily catch pedestrians out.

Notwithstanding the safety in use issue the area can quickly become unsightly and be disproportionately expensive to clean and maintain.
